Mission Statement

St Luke's Church exists to build community in the local area, bring spiritual inspiration, emotional support and practical help.

History

St Luke's is an Anglican Church founded in 1933 as a mission hall for the area of Cold Harbour. Canon Stather-Hunt, the then vicar of St Matthew's Church on Marlborough Road, led the vision and had a real interest in the community in this area. St Matthew's & St Luke's have remained linked to the current day and support each other's work.

Over the years St Luke's has played an integral role in the community. In the 1940s the church hosted a baby weighing clinic and was a popular place for young mums to meet. Several generations of children and teenagers have passed through the clubs run by the church and more recently St Luke's has begun to work closely with other organisations to increase its work in the community.

Ethos & Values

St Luke’s is a special kind of church that is also a community project.

What makes us a church?

• We are learning how to live our life together, with Jesus at the centre.
• We are discovering the truth through prayer, worship and study of the Bible together as well as sharing experiences and activities.
• We live like an extended family, looking out for each other.
• We find strength in our weakness.
• We are connected with other Christians within the Anglican diocese and with congregations from other traditions.
• We want to be the “streetlamps” in our neighbourhood, illuminating the way to Jesus and lighting up the life of the whole community.

What makes us a community project?

• We will always have an open door, especially to those in need.
• We want the best for everyone who lives in Cold Harbour and will work hard to achieve it.

A past member of our church, Ernesto Lozada-Uzuriaga, designed our logo. The cross represents the centrality of Jesus' death in our faith. The dove represents the work of the Holy Spirit in helping us to follow God. The roots in the left hand corner symbolise the importance of being rooted in God's love and the corner in the right hand of the logo represents the need to find our home together in the love of the Father.
